What is Environmental Policy?

by

Environmental policy is a policy enacted by the government or a public entity that helps to reduce the effects of human activity on our environment. Environmental policy came about because of the dangers humans were imposing on the Earth. Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of how our actions hurt the environment because those actions don’t directly affect us. We also feel that anything that comes from nature will always be available. Both of these mindsets have created an environment that needs our help—and that’s where environmental policy comes in.

Environmental policies we are all aware of include no polluting, which usually has a fine attached to it, and regulations on things such as chemicals and nuclear power. Environmental policies can come in the form of laws, regulations or even financial incentives, such as tax breaks for environmentally-friendly behavior like using solar energy or electric cars.

Many people who are passionate about the environment will look for new ways to make a change—but as one person, it can often be hard to make an impact. Fortunately, there is a career path for those who want to dedicate their job to helping the Earth. Becoming an environmental policy maker requires a degree and the right studies to understand what it takes to influence policy.

At Everglades University, we offer a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Environmental Policy and Management. The program prepares students by teaching them business and management skills, environmental policy and specific technical and occupational subjects. Students will learn the impact of industrialization on the environment and environmental technology and management, all while honing in on skills surrounding critical thinking, communication and management.

After graduation, students can enter into government or other environmentally-related professions.

Sample courses include:

  • Global Environmental Politics
  • Energy Policy
  • The Science of Persuasion and Negotiation
  • Environmental Technology and Management
  • Coastal Environment Management
  • Justice and Sustainability
  • And more
