How to Make the Most of Your Last Year of College

by

College is an exciting time, and while many of us look forward to our final year of school, it shouldn’t be a time for relaxing and taking it easy. In fact, your last year of college is a vital time to getting your career on track and crafting a future of success. Follow these tips to make the most of your final year.

Use Your Time Wisely

It is likely that you have already fulfilled the requirements needed to graduate by the time your senior year approaches, or at least halfway through. Instead of taking this extra time to relax, consider using your leftover credit hours to take courses that will help you with your chosen career. Try taking a class in public speaking or communications if you plan to go into International Business or Business Administration or take an additional management course to be better prepared for your career in energy management. You also have the option of using any of your extra time not in classes to take on an internship, network with like-minded individuals and shadow a professional you admire.

Form Bonds with Your Professors

Whether you’ve had the same professor throughout your time at college or you are just meeting one your senior year, now is a great time to form relationships with them. Senior year courses are often more in-tune with your chosen profession and the professors who teach these courses either currently have a job within that field or once did. Most of them will have a plethora of connections that will help you immensely once you graduate and beyond.

Get Your Life in Order

Many students work while they get their degree, so figuring out their chosen career path is usually already done for them. But, having to take courses and fill your schedule with study time and class time is about to change, so it’s important to understand what life will look like once you finish with school. Speak to your current boss about taking on more responsibility, getting a promotion or receiving a pay raise once you earn that degree. If you do not currently have a job in the field you want, use your senior year to search for openings, make connections, speak with a recruiter and land a job before you graduate.

Take Advantage of the Services at Your School

At Everglades University, each of our students are given an academic advisor to help them throughout their college career. But these advisors can also be helpful with your life post-college. Take the time while still in school to sit down and chat with your advisor about how they can help you land your dream job or get a promotion. You should also take advantage of alumni services, library services and other on-campus and online help that is offered to current students before you can no longer use them.

If you are looking to advance in your career or change career paths, your first step is obtaining a degree. Everglades University specializes in those who need a flexible schedule with their classes and is a great first step in getting to where you want to go.
