4 Ways to Stand Out on Your Admissions Application

by

As students become more involved in their academics and extracurriculars, it can be harder and harder to stand out on applications. Where it used to be unique to play a sport, it is now not only commonplace but often expected that students participate in activities outside of schoolwork. So how, exactly, can a student stand out on an admissions application in today’s competitive world? We take a look at four top ways.

Visit the School

Many universities host open houses so prospective students can take a look at the campus and learn more about what the school offers. But what many students don’t realize is that these tours also allow students to connect with local administrators and admissions counselors as they are often run by those individuals. This allows the school to put a face to the name and can really help you stand out among applicants. If you are unable to visit a campus in-person, try to connect with others at the school or contact an admissions counselor to ask questions prior to applying.

Don’t Write the Same Thing for Every Application

Whether you are applying to two schools or 20 schools, try to treat each application individually. Often, students will apply to multiple schools and copy and paste information, or use the same essay, and send it out to all of them at once. This creates a lack of personality as it does not show each college why you choose them specifically. Instead, try to include information that pertains to the school at hand and include reasons why that school means so much to you.

Reach Out

If you have questions, or do not hear from a school, don’t be afraid to reach out to them and check in. Often, admissions counselors are tracking how often a student checks in and how interested they seem in the school and the programs. If you do not contact them at least once, it could show a lack of interest and actually hurt your chances of admissions. So don’t be afraid to ask those questions—that’s what they are there for!

Focus on your Essay*

*Everglades University does not require an essay, many colleges do

While your transcripts say a lot about your performance, it’s your essay that will let colleges know what you’re truly about. With so many students submitting exemplary transcripts and grades, admissions counselors often look to the essay to find someone who stands out. Write about something that is important to you, keep it as personal as you can and show the admissions office why you deserve a spot in their school. If a university does not require an essay, consider drafting a cover letter or a well-written e-mail to get the same point across.
