4 Benefits of Working While in College

by

For many lucky students, college is their full time job. Unfortunately, with the high cost of attending college, most students find that they also must find a job to support themselves and their studies. In addition to that, older students going back to school to complete or further their studies also account for a big population of current students, and all, or most, of them are likely to have a job outside of their studies as well.

Having a job and attending college is a stressful mix, but there are a lot of benefits to working while in school.

Experience

If you are working within the field you wish to go into, you will gain a solid foundation before you even enter the workforce. Internships and work study programs are becoming more and more important, and those students who don’t participate in either of these often have a much harder time finding work after they graduate. You may also be able to slowly climb the ladder while still in school and graduate with a job you can turn into a career.

Less Debt

We hear all the time how students are leaving college with more debt than they can handle. A big way to avoid this is to work while you are in college. By doing this, you can either help pay for your credits or you can afford to pay for your other expenses, requiring less money from a federal or private student loan. Even if a job doesn’t completely let you avoid debt, it will greatly reduce the burden you will feel when you graduate and have to start paying your loans back.

Less Stress

It’s proven that the more cash we have in our pockets, the less stress we feel. Working while in college can lead to a lot of added pressure, but it also relieves students of a lot of the money-related stress. You will have more spending money to treat yourself to your favorite meal after passing a test or an extra cup of coffee. Even little things like this make things a lot more enjoyable and greatly reduce our stress levels.

Skills

A big part of having a career is learning how to manage your time and your money. For first time students, a job is the best way to learn these much-needed skills. Having to balance both work and school is difficult, and once you master that, you will be better prepared to enter the work force and do so successfully.
